Postpartum Depression Treatment

in Columbia, Maryland

Do you feel overwhelmed by everything motherhood is asking of you?

Do you feel anxious, irritable, or like you’ve lost the version of yourself you used to know?

Do the tears come more often than you expected?

Does even the simplest part of the day feel hard right now?

Becoming a parent is an exciting journey, but it can also be filled with so much uncertainty. Your body is changing, your baby’s needs are constantly changing, and so much can feel outside of your control. Therapy can be a place where you feel supported, understood, and held through this transition.

At Worthy To Live Therapy, I provide compassionate postpartum depression therapy for mothers in Columbia, Howard County, and surrounding areas of Maryland and Washington, DC.

Is it normal to feel this way after having a baby?

Feeling a short period of emotional distress after giving birth is very common. Up to 80% of parents experience baby blues which looks like crying spells, anxiety, or mood swings that may start the first 2-3 days after giving birth and last up to 2 weeks.

If symptoms persist beyond the 2 weeks and become more intense, some parents may experience PPD also known as Postpartum Depression.

What are the signs of postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression does not always look like sadness. Sometimes it looks like functioning, cleaning the bottles, doing all the things, but you may find yourself:

  • Feeling irritable or angry

  • Feeling not like yourself anymore

  • Losing interest in things you normally enjoyed

  • Feeling immense guilt or feeling like you’re not a good mom

  • Having trouble concentrating

  • Anxious and overwhelmed throughout the day

  • Crying more often than usual

  • Feeling disconnected from your baby or partner

These symptoms can appear anytime in the first year after childbirth.

What to expect in postpartum depression in therapy?

Therapy is a space to slow down and understand what you're experiencing rather than pushing through.

In therapy, we may work on:

Understanding what's happening.
We'll explore your symptoms, your transition into motherhood, and what may be contributing to how you're feeling.

Reducing guilt and self-blame.
Motherhood can come with enormous expectations. Therapy can help you separate unrealistic expectations from what you actually need.

Emotion regulation in motherhood.
We can develop healthier ways to navigate anxiety, anger, overwhelm, sadness, and emotional dysregulation.

Reconnecting with yourself.
You are more than a mother. Therapy can help you reconnect with your identity, values, relationships, and the parts of yourself that may have felt lost during this transition.

Processing difficult experiences.
For some mothers, postpartum depression occurs alongside a difficult pregnancy, traumatic birth, NICU experience, pregnancy loss, or other painful experiences. When appropriate, we can address those experiences as part of your healing.
